I AM replying to the Hough Green reader in last week’s World who suggested that the council could save money by switching off street lights on side roads at midnight.

Perhaps he could work out how much fuel would be saved by turning off the lights in the side streets then perhaps our imaginations wouldn’t run riot.

To give him a start he would need to know the total wattage of the light switched off and the price per unit of electricity.

He should them be able to express the savings in money terms and also work out the fuel needed to produce that wattage.

I do hope he goes ahead with this little problem and that you publish the results.

I am very intrigued.
