KURT Gidley could miss next week’s Super League clash at Salford after suffering a concussion during Warrington Wolves’ win over Wakefield.

The half back was in inspired form in the 34-16 win, scoring a try and creating two others before having to be removed after a head knock.

And Smith says it may well be a new half-back combination that features at the AJ Bell Stadium on Thursday with Stefan Ratchford and Dec Patton both hoping to impress in the reserves’ trip to Hull FC on Sunday.

“He’s ok,” said Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby about Gidley. “But it’s a concussion so I dare say we’ll be having a different half back combination.

“I would keep that half back combination, they’re working pretty well together. He was terrific before it came to a head knock.

“He and Chrissy (Sandow) are combining well and getting the team around pretty well.”

Sandow crossed for two tries, the first a superb individual effort and the second from Gidley’s pass, and Smith was impressed with the pair.

"The halves did some special stuff and took the line on,” he added. “It was a tough game, at times the slowest game in the world, but when Wakey had the ball it was fast and in your face.

"We lacked the control and tempo of the game, they played to their strengths and played the tactics they wanted.

"I thought they got a good result a huge and a huge improvement from last year."

Smith’s older brother Brian, Wakefield head coach, expects his sibling’s side to be flying high come the business end of the season.

"Happy to dip my lid to my younger bro again and he's got the making of a really great team,” he said. “If Wolves aren't up there at the end of the year, I'll be very surprised.

"I'd like to start in his position, but he's doing a great job in a great club and they're a team on a mission."

Ben Currie grabbed two tries and also caught his coach’s eye, but former Great Britain boss Smith says Wolves will need to improve next week if they are to make it four from frou this season.

"There will be games we won't be at our very best but if you can still come out on top that's what you want,” he said.

"Ben Currie played three different positions and did very well in each one, he's a class act and getting better.

"There were other good performers too, but a few off their game. A few individual errors hurt us at the wrong times.

"A bit of execution needed, we'll do some hard work over the weekend.

"The results have been ok, but in terms of our performance we need to control games better.

"In that first half we were a bit all over the place. It'll come, it's still early days and we haven't quite hit our straps yet.”
