THE Silver Jubilee Bridge will become a crossing for the local community - once the iconic Mersey Gateway opens.
It will be reduced to two carriageways and cycle lanes.
Expressway feeder roads will be demolished to create direct access to Runcorn railway station and possibly open up the Bridgewater Canal.
Steve Nicholson, project director, said: "The community will gain tremendously from new facilities dedicated to Halton rather than the Silver Jubilee being a vital artery for regional purposes.
"Eighty per cent of traffic will be taken away.
"There are a lot of Expressway, link and loop roads that will not be needed.
"It's the wider picture that is important, doing something for local people.
"We can return it to the community."
It will be tolled, but will be free for buses, cyclists and pedestrians.
