RUNCORN Linnets Ladies did enough to progress to the last eight of the Cheshire Women's League Challenge Cup without really getting into second gear.

Player of the match Ellie Dyson's double strike took their tally to five goals in four appearances since signing as Linnets extended the weekend's 21st birthday celebrations for winger Lucy Wieland.

Egerton had been the first to show with a dangerous free kick, which the Runcorn defence dealt with easily.

Linnets then pushed the home side back with a series of four corners in the opening seven minutes.

A minute later, Marcia Jones -Sacharewicz slotted home the second from inside a crowded penalty area.

Egerton had a couple of free-kicks around the Linnets penalty area but failed to make any of them count.

In the 32nd minute, Chelsea Gillies provided a pass into the box for Ellie Dyson to run onto to make it 2-0.

And Gillies herself got on the score sheet, beating the home 'keeper from distance in the 41st minute.

In a carbon copy move, Gillies with a shot from a similar distance just cleared the Egerton crossbar on the stroke of half-time.

Runcorn made two changes at half time, Megan Pickering and Demi-lee Rogers replacing Lyndsey Hopley and Lucy Wieland.

But manager John Pickering quickly had to make two more substitutions in the opening 10 minutes of the second half with injuries to Ellen Johnston and Jones-Sacharewicz. Lile Ashley and Jo Finnegan were the replacements.

With Egerton vastly improving as the game went on, it was no surprise when they pulled a goal back in the 56th minute.

Dyson had a chance for her second in the 65th minute but her shot went agonisingly wide of the right post.

But in a frantic final few minutes, with Egerton appealing for offside, she rounded the 'keeper to score.

With time nearly up, Jess Bazley struck the bar with a shot from outside the penalty area.
