WIDNES Vikings have made a double signing with Jake Spedding and Deon Cross joining on one-year deals ahead of the 2020 season.

The former St Helens academy member Cross joins the Vikings from Barrow Raiders, having spent the 2019 season with the Cumbrian outfit after starting out his Championship career with Rochdale Hornets a year earlier.

Spedding is a St Helens Academy graduate and made a handful of appearances in their first team after debuting in the 2016 season. During his time at the League Leaders, Spedding was also an England Academy international.

He is a talented centre with a strong running game and solid defensive abilities, which have been developed during spells at Sheffield Eagles and Barrow Raiders.

The 22-year old joins the Vikings with plenty of Betfred Championship experience under his belt. After spells at Sheffield and Barrow, Jake signed for Featherstone Rovers in August of this year until the end of the 2019 season.

Spedding will link up with the Vikings' first team squad for pre-season, and look to help push the squad towards the upper end of the Betfred Championship in 2020.

Spedding said: “I’m delighted it’s all signed and sorted, I can’t wait to get started.

“Kieron spoke to me a couple of times and was keen for me to come and join this club, which speaks volumes to me.

“I’ve been at a few clubs now in the Championship, and I’m starting to get a feel of what is needed to be successful in this division. Hopefully I can bring some of that to the squad for next season.

“This club is massive and speaks for itself, and I’d love nothing more than to help get it back up to where it belongs.

“I want to let the fans know that I’ll give 100% every time I wear the shirt, and hopefully I can reward them with plenty of tries and some fast, attacking rugby.”

Meanwhile the latest recruit Cross finished last season as the Raiders’ top try scorer with 14 tries in 30 appearances, including a brilliant length of the field effort against Widnes at the Halton Stadium back in June.

In 2018, he impressed in his debut Championship campaign at former club Rochdale, crossing the try line 11 times in his 27 outings.

The versatile centre can also operate as a winger and at fullback, as he has plenty of pace to burn and possesses solid defensive attributes.

Cross will be hoping to cement his place in the starting 13 during the 2020 campaign, and will aim to help the club climb the Championship table.

Cross commented: “I’m really excited to be joining such a great club like Widnes for the 2020 season, and I am grateful for the opportunity.

“Having spoken to Kieron, the direction and vision that he has for the team and the club moving forward persuaded me to join the Vikings.

“I’m looking forward to getting out there for my first game playing in front of the supporters. Widnes have a great fan base that take a big number of travelling supporters to away games too, and that was also one of the reasons which persuaded me to join this club.

“With the team that we are putting together, I’m sure we will have a top Championship side in 2020.

“Hopefully the fans will see that I’m hard working and consistent, and I will always make sure that I give 100% week in week out for this club.”
