We sat down with The Wire's new marquee signing Blake Austin to ask him a few quickfire questions...

Sporting hero?

I’d probably say my mum and dad. They weren’t sports stars, but I owe everything I’ve achieved to those two.

If you could bring one NRL player with you to The Wire, who would it be and why?

I would have brought big Josh Papalii. He’s great around the group and anyone who’s watched him knows he’s a pretty handy player. He would be difficult to stop over here, so I would bring him.

Our partners are very close, too, so it would make the transition for my partner much easier.

Do you have a rugby league team that you support?

I was a Parramatta Eels fan when I was younger. Now, it’s whoever I’m playing for.

Any pre-match superstitions?

I have lots. Way too many to go into!

Best advice you’ve ever been given?

Something along the lines of nothing coming without hard work. It probably took me a little longer than it should have to learn that.

Scoring tries or assisting them?

I’ll take a try any day of the week!

If Ben Westwood and Jason Clark were to get in a boxing ring, who would win?

I’d probably back Bennie, Clarky’s too nice! I reckon Clarky would throw the towel in straight away and give Bennie the win.

How do you like to relax away from rugby?

Anything with the kids. They take up a lot of my time, otherwise I’m just laying around at home watching TV. I love my footy, so I find it hard to switch off!

What are you watching on TV at the moment?

I’m into Power at the moment. It’s frustrating that you watch a few episodes and get caught up but then wait six months for more to come out!

I’m trying to get into some English TV though. Maybe I’ll give Coronation Street a try!

Funniest thing you’ve seen on a rugby field?

I played with Jy Hitchcox, who’s at Bradford now, at the Tigers a few years ago. There was a half of footy we played where he was at full-back and he wasn’t involved much at all.

In video a few days later, we questioned why he was so quiet and he told us he’d had a bit of an accident downstairs on the field as he’d had diarrhea during the week!

He’s a pretty funny character is Jy so he wasn’t shy to tell us about it.

Best Christmas present you’ve ever received, and who was it off?

Me and my sister got Gameboys one Christmas when we were kids. We actually woke up really early on Christmas morning and opened them without Mum and Dad watching.

They were pretty upset that they didn’t get to watch us open them!

Worst Christmas present you’ve ever received?

I don’t remember too many of the bad ones, only the good!

There’s no such thing as a bad Christmas present anyway. You didn’t pay for it after all!
