HOOKER Jordan Johnstone is the latest player to commit his future to Widnes Vikings as they look to make an instant return to the Betfred Super League.

The Cumbrian-born rake joined the club’s academy in 2015, going on to make his Super League debut the following year away to Catalans Dragons.

21-year-old Johnstone has made 36 appearances for the Vikings, scoring two tries, and was limited to 13 appearances last season due to injury, having impressed during a loan spell with London Broncos in the opening month of the campaign.

Johnstone said: “I’m happy to be staying with the club. After a disappointing campaign in 2018, I feel like I owe it to the club to try and get them back up to Super League next year and give my all.

“The club have gone out and retained all of the youngsters and are trying to create something special, with the addition of some senior lads. It’s an exciting time because the young lads have worked hard coming through the ranks, and I’ve played with every one of them at academy level.

"We all know each other inside and out, and hopefully we can click during pre-season and hit the ground running.

“It would be outstanding for me to be part of a team that brings this club back to Super League. I couldn’t put into words how good it would feel if this group of players can take the Vikings back to the top flight in 2020.

“The Championship is a tough physical division, but it probably isn’t as fast as Super League. There are some big bodies in there though, it is a physical competition and it isn’t going to be easy by any means.

"We will need to be at our best every week when we’re going to the likes of Batley and Dewsbury because they are tough places to go.

“I’m looking forward to working with Liam Hood in the new season.

"He has played a lot of games in Super League and the Championship and is a proven player. I’m going to be working hard during pre-season because I want to be the starting hooker next year, so I will be out to prove myself and hopefully me and Liam can work well together next year.

“Since I made my step up to the first team I haven’t really suffered from any injuries, and the one last year was a bit of a freak one in training. I’m back fit and healthy now and come round one I’m going to be ready, and hopefully I can stay in the team all season.”

Phil Finney, Widnes Vikings' Performance Director, said: “JJ showed great commitment when he moved to Widnes from his home in Whitehaven, at the age of 18, to pursue a career rugby league.

“Throughout his time at Widnes Vikings, he has continually demonstrated a strong work ethic, toughness and a desire to progress.

“His character makes him a well-respected member of our playing group and I am sure that he will be an important member of our squad next year.”
