HEP Cahill has been announced as Widnes Vikings’ new Club Captain, after extending his contract for the 2019 Betfred Championship season.

The powerful packman joined the club from Crusaders RL in 2012.

In his 142 game tenure at the club, Cahill has consistently earned the respect of players and supporters alike for his work ethic, leadership and personal values.

Cahill will play an important role in representing the Vikings both on and off the field.

His brief id to help to drive standards and team culture amongst all levels of the Vikings playing group, acting as a conduit between players and staff, and representing the Vikings to key partners and community groups.

This move offers important recognition to a man who has collected both the Widnes Vikings Player of the Year, voted by the Club's Stronghold Members, and Players' Player of the Year accolades during his time at the Vikings.

A Team Captain can be appointed by the coaching and playing group in due course, ahead of the start of the 2019 Betfred Championship season.

James Rule, CEO of Widnes Vikings, says: “As we look to make an immediate return to the Super League, it is important that we bring to the fore the individuals who can lead by example and demonstrate the desire to fight for this club.

"Hep is someone whose character, dedication and values are of incredible importance to Widnes Vikings. As someone who has made personal sacrifices previously for the greater good of this club, supported countless local causes without any wish for recognition, and never shied away from challenge on the field, Hep is exactly the type of person whose status should be elevated.

"I am pleased that Hep has chosen to commit his future to Widnes Vikings, a club and community that means a tremendous amount to him, and agreed to take on this role. Agreeing Hep’s renewal and leadership position is an important facet in our plans to assemble a squad with the right qualities to return the Vikings to the Super League.”

Cahill said: “I am incredibly honoured to accept the role of Club Captain at Widnes Vikings.

"I have loved my time at this club and it is absolutely devastating to experience relegation.

"I know what restoring the Vikings back to the Super League will mean to local people, and I will never have a prouder experience in my career than making that happen.

"Widnes is home to me and my family – we’ve been welcomed with open arms by the town and love the place. I’m determined to give my all to this team and this town, in our bid to earn promotion. I welcome this opportunity to take on a formal leadership role and help set standards at the club; I promise you that I’ll do my best and always strive to lead by example.

"This town is passionate about its team, and I am sure that we will see that over the coming days with people signing up for Stronghold Membership or to offer sponsorship for next season.

"These next few weeks are absolutely key to the club being able to build a strong squad for 2019 and keeping the best of its talent. I’d like to say a personal thank you to everyone who helps with this by committing their support, I am grateful for your commitment and faith.”
