A LANDMARK Widnes restaurant has become the latest victim of the credit crunch.

The Coterie in Birchfield Road has closed with the loss of 34 jobs.

It was run by David and Christine Tearle and had established an excellent reputation for fine food and wine.

Director David Tearle said: “Christine and I are devastated at the closure of the restaurant and wine bar and would like to thank all our customers, suppliers and staff for their support over the years.

“It is with deep sorry and regret that The Coterie has closed and we will greatly miss all who helped to make the restaurant a pleasure to run.”

Head chef Alan Hewitt and sous chef Gaz Daley are among staff who lost their jobs.

Some customers were shocked to discover the restaurant had shut as they only bought gift vouchers at Christmas.

Gary Evans, aged 47, of Upton Rocks, said: “It is outrageous selling vouchers when they knew they were closing down.

“We have a £50 voucher and my father-in-law has an £80 one. We have since spoken to several other people with vouchers.”

The Coterie advises customers with vouchers to e-mail dt@thecoterie.co.uk for refunds.
