CUTE little Rhys Dowd has melted the hearts of World readers.

The 11-month-old boy has to wear a helmet, 23 hours a day, to re-shape his head, left disfigured after a difficult birth.

Just hours after his mum appealed for help towards specialist treatment, almost £700, half the money she needs, was generously donated.

Michelle Knight, aged 24, of Alt in Hough Green, Widnes, said: “I sat there crying, I was so moved.

“I was amazed that complete strangers are willing to help a little boy they don’t even know.

“I can’t believe how many lovely people are out there.

“This helmet has made such a difference to Rhys’ life.

“He will be one next week and this is the best birthday present I could ever have dreamed of.

“I want to say a big thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all the World readers who have helped us.”

Forceps and ventouse, a suction cap, were attached to Rhys’ head to aid delivery.

He has been diagnosed with severe plagiocephaly, commonly known as flat head syndrome, but treatment is not available on the NHS.

Michelle feared Rhys would be bullied and found a private clinic which fitted a helmet to re-shape his skull whilst it is soft and pliable.

She is thrilled she can now take him back to London for his next appointment, a consultation her family couldn’t afford.

George Smith, of Buckingham Avenue, Widnes, said: “That little boy’s face must melt everyone’s heart.

“When I read he can’t get treatment done on the NHS, I thought I’ll do something. You cannot refuse that little face.”

John Whiteside, of Oakfield Drive, Widnes, said: “Our granddaughter’s head was slightly odd looking when she was born but it corrected itself.

“We give to lots of good causes and are happy to help those less fortunate.”

Jacqueline Lloyd, of Highfield Road, Widnes, has also made a donation.

Runcorn spiritualist Lyn Marshall and her friends have pledged to raise £500.

She said: “I was nearly crying when I read about Rhys.

“We are all happy to help him.”

She is having a clairvoyance night on Tuesday, October 12 at Runcorn RAOB and is also looking for a venue in Widnes.

Local historian Diane Nowell, of Runcorn, has pledged £100 by offering to give a slide show of old Widnes.

New hair salon, Glamour in Peelhouse Lane, Widnes, is donating a percentage of takings to Rhys.

If you wish to help Rhys, you can make a donation at The Halifax in Widnes.
