FLY-TIPPED waste was set alight near to Fiddler’s Ferry power station.
One fire engine from Penketh rushed to the scene in Cuerdley late on Tuesday night.
This came after Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a large bonfire at around 9.40pm.
On arrival at the scene, the crew found that materials believed to have been fly-tipped were on fire and unattended.
Firefighters had to use water backpacks in relays to put out the flames as they had to make their way a significant distance on foot to reach the incident.
Stack drags were also used to put out the blaze, which was around 100 square metres in size.
Fiddler’s Ferry power station began operations in 1971 and was fully commissioned by 1973, operating for nearly 50 years before its decommissioning in March 2020.
The land has been earmarked for housing and industrial use following demolition work, which is underway in phases.
