A Wirral charity that supports people living with cancer has had a funding boost of more than £2,500 from supermarket giant Sainsbury’s.

Maggie’s Wirral was nominated to receive the £2,588.69 from branch managers in Upton, Ellesmere Port and Birkenhead.

Managers that nominated were Laura Smith (store manager at Upton), Richard Druce (Ellesmere Port store) and Toni Linley (Birkenhead store).

Located just a stone’s throw away from Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Wirral, Maggie's is described as 'warm, welcoming, very light and uplifting'. It offers a programme of support which has been shown to improve physical and emotional well-being.

The team features cancer specialist nurses, a clinical psychologist giving immediate advice and support and benefit advisors to help with money worries.

Laura Smith, store manager of Upton Sainsburys said: "The wonderful team at Maggie’s Cancer Charity Wirral received £2,588.69 to continue their support to people in our areas living with cancer.

"We chose Maggie’s as the centre has supported both our customers and colleagues during their cancer journeys.

"Maggie's have also supported us in our roles at Sainsbury’s, they provided training for how we can support members of staff that are affected by cancer."

Maggie's offers ‘How to Deal Cancer in the Workplace’ training sessions to local employers. The training session is facilitated by the centre head, Kathy Wright and works in partnership with Brabners Law firm.

"The session provides an understanding of the emotional and physical needs of employees and the financial impacts that a cancer diagnosis can bring.

"Brabners offer practical guidance to help employers create the right framework to be able to support employees with cancer and to protect the organisation.

Laura said: "The session has been invaluable for us to support our colleagues at their most vulnerable time.

"We look forward to continuing to work with this amazing charity."

Kathy Wright, centre head at Maggie's, said: "We are extremely grateful to Sainsbury’s for nominating Maggie’s to receive this donation.

"It is important that people know we are here for anyone affected by cancer, and because bewildering changes not only affect the person with cancer, but also their family and friends, we offer our services to them as well.

"If you or anyone you know is struggling, please do just drop in."
