A PERSON has been rescued from a car stranded in flood water in Widnes.

It comes as flooding has forced police to close a number of roads across the town this afternoon, Tuesday.

One fire engine from Widnes Fire Station was dispatched to Hutchinson Street at around 1.20pm.

This came following reports that a car was stranded in flood water.

Firefighters in waders used poles to get to the car, where they were able to release the occupant from the vehicle and take them to dry land.

Thankfully, there were no reported injuries.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “Due to flooding, Hutchinson Street, Cromwell Street, Nelson Street, Carr Lane, Lower Road, Desoto Road, and Hale Bank Road are currently closed.

“They are not passable and are expected to remain closed for some time due to floods.

“Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is offering assistance to a stranded motorist on Hutchinson Street.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the areas and use alternative routes.”

A flood alert is currently in force for areas in Widnes and Runcorn.
