RESIDENTS in parts of Runcorn are being urged to keep their doors and windows closed due to a large oil spill.

Wood Lane is currently closed, close to the Holiday Inn and near to the M56.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is in attendance at the scene, while Cheshire police has closed the road

The incident was reported at 8.44am and the county oil team is en route to assist with the clean up operation.

Emergency services have confirmed that the oil has leaked from a tanker.

Firefighters are working to stem the leak and transfer the fluid into a second tanker in attendance.

The fire service is advising residents in the vicinity to keep their doors and windows shut.

A police spokesman said: “A road closure is in place on Wood Lane. There is currently an ongoing incident between police and fire.

“The road is currently closed as it is unsafe due to fuel on the road. Please avoid the area while we deal with the incident.

“For residents in Sutton Weaver and Beechwood, we ask that you please keep all doors and windows closed for the next few hours.

“The road is likely to remain closed for quite some time until a clean-up has been completed and the road is safe for cars to travel on again.

“We appreciate your cooperation and patience at this time.”
