A new apartment block aimed at helping first time buyers get a foot on the property ladder looks set for the green light in Runcorn.

Halton Council’s Development Management Committee is recommended to approve an application by housing association Onward Homes for 12 apartments off The Ridgeway. The land is currently vacant but used to be home to Murdishaw Methodist Church.

If given the go ahead, a block of flats would be built consisting of nine, one bed apartments and three, two bed. The properties would be made available under what is called 'affordable rent to buy' tenure.

Rent to buy is a government-backed scheme that allows tenants to rent at 80 per cent of a property’s market value, this in theory enables them to save up for a deposit so they can eventually buy the property.

If approved, the scheme would have 12 parking spaces including two disabled spaces. There would also be two electric vehicle (EV) charging bays, along with 12 covered and secure bicycle parking spaces.

A demolition notice for the church was submitted in 2019. Earlier in
2023, Onward sought advice from the council's planning department about its intentions to build eight, three-bedroomed houses. But it was advised that an apartment scheme may be more acceptable.

Recommending approval, a report to the committee, said the site was 'rough and overgrown' and bordered by trees.

A design and access statement submitted in support of the plans, said: “The proposed apartment scheme proposes to utilise the site which will likely remain empty and closed off from the public if not developed, it will suit its environment and not interrupt any of the existing services/facilities in the area.”

It added: “In conclusion, we believe the proposal is suitable for the area and provides much needed new high quality housing to the community."
