A FIRE was deliberately started on the site of a former sports and social club in Runcorn.

Two fire crews were dispatched from Widnes and Penketh at approximately 5.44pm following reports of a blaze on the site of the Pavilions sports and social club today, Sunday.

Firefighters attended the scene of the fire on Sandy Lane and gained access to the disused sports centre.

The source of the flames coming from a set of traffic cones which had been set alight 'deliberately'.

A horse reel jet was used to extinguish the flames before the scene was deemed safe.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Fire Service said: "Firefighters gained access to a disused sports centre where a fire had been reported.

"The fire, outside the disused pavilion, involved traffic cones and is believed to have been started deliberately. A hose reel jet was used to put out the flames."
