THERE are huge queues in Runcorn and Widnes this morning as the Mersey Gateway remains partially closed.

Emergency lane closures were initially put in place on the bridge on Wednesday.

This was after damages were discovered which related to a section of the expansion joint.

Traffic on the Mersey Gateway and around the area has been particularly heavy since this, with bridge users describing Widnes as gridlocked at peak times.

The lane closures will remain in place until 2pm afternoon, Friday, when repair work is expected to be completed.

In the meantime, Halton Borough Council has put measures in place to relieve the congestion.

Yesterday afternoon, it announced it closed the Silver Jubilee Bridge to traffic travelling from Runcorn to Widnes.

The council said this was to allow southbound traffic to flow freely over the Silver Jubilee Bridge.

The arrangements are in place until all Mersey Gateway lanes reopen.
