A SUBWAY underneath the Silver Jubilee Bridge has been described as ‘dark, rat-infested and downright dangerous’.

This is despite recent upgrades to the bridge above it.

The subway from West Bank in Widnes underneath the iconic bridge is said to be known locally as the ‘rat-infested muggers alley’.

It has been photographed showing overgrown weeds, litter and dark lighting.

Recent refurbishment work to the Silver Jubilee Bridge saw a new lighting scheme introduced with bespoke colour schemes to mark special occasions, to be synchronised with the Mersey Gateway.

To carry out the work, the bridge was closed to motorists from February, but no improvements have been made to the subway.

Renovation of the famous bridge and the installation of new lighting aims to ‘boost the position of the bridge as a major landmark in the north west’.

This is according to Cllr Stef Nelson, Halton Borough Council’s portfolio holder for environment and urban renewal.

The work also aimed to ‘help contribute towards promoting a night-time economy and culture in the borough”’

The scheme did not impact the budget for council services.

A spokesman for Halton Borough Council said: “Local ward councillors were made aware of some recent problems in that area.

"In response, they arranged for burnt-out debris to be removed, lights to be inspected and repaired and the subway to be cleaned.

"In response to requests to council officers, arrangements are also being made for the subway to be painted.

“As we have said, the council will carry out work to clear any litter and vegetation on our land.

"There is also ongoing communication with Network Rail over the clearing of vegetation that is on its land and overhanging from the embankment.”
