THE controversial closure of the Daresbury Expressway will start on Wednesday - and it won't reopen until September.

As we have reported previously, residents say the move will create traffic chaos.

The road will be shut completely, except for the Creamfields weekend, until September 9 to allow work on a new housing estate.

Announcements the road closure would be delayed over rat-run fears due to schools lead to confusion amongst residents.

Whilst Redrow stated that June 28 was the newly chosen date for shutting the main road due to schools closing, many pointed out that not all schools will be closed by this date.

Sam Beau Dean commented on the issue on Facebook, saying:

“So HBC (Halton Borough Council) do not even know when the school holidays start?

It’s going to be a nightmare for those whose children go to Sandymoor, Daresbury & Moore schools for at least 5 weeks until the term actually ends in July!”

Residents have also reacted angrily to the multi-month closure, stating that it will create traffic chaos.

Jack Boughey also commented on Facebook, where he said: “Imagine the chaos when the 56 is gridlocked at the same time as Sandymoor & Moore.

“Helsby, Frodsham, Sutton Weaver, Runcorn & Warrington will be total standstill.”

Mike Amesbury, MP for Weaver Vale, acknowledged the issues this would cause, saying: “Conversations have taken place and an element of common-sense has prevailed.

“At least now, Redrow has agreed to do this during the school holidays. The work has to happen and unfortunately it’s still going to cause a headache for constituents."

Housebuilders Redrow agreed to delay the shutting down of the road till next Wednesday, with the original date having been June 5.

One angry resident Angela Cook asked on Facebook: “Are Redrow going to reimburse motorists for extra fuel costs?”
