A WIDNES school’s plea to help save the hedgehogs has resulted in a generous donation of custom-made houses that will give many hogs a place to live comfortably within the school grounds.

Pupils of St Michael with St Thomas Church of England Primary School in Hough Green contacted established construction company, Miller Homes, via a written letter to request they make room for hedgehog homes in their future developments.

The class had been studying hedgehogs and how their surroundings are critical to their survival.

To the school’s surprise, in a generous response to the letter, Miller Homes supplied a number of cosy wooden shelters that could be dotted around the school to house the endangered creatures.

The home builders also researched the wildlife issue on a national level and are putting up suggestions for consideration in the future.

Clare Noakes, Miller Homes’ Sales Director for the Northwest, said: “We are delighted to support St Michael with St Thomas Primary School’s initiative to help protect hedgehogs.

“As a responsible homebuilder, we believe it is essential to consider the impact of our developments on local wildlife and their habitats.

“We hope that our donation will help raise awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting the natural environment for future generations.”

The pupils have now strategically placed the miniature huts around the grounds of the school, excitedly awaiting the arrivals of their charming visitors.

Kaye Hogan, Primary school teacher at St Michael with St Thomas said: “The school is grateful for the donation and the opportunity to teach its students about the importance of environmental conservation.

“We would like to thank Miller Homes for hearing us out and actually following through to engage with us, which will make a significant difference in the lives of our local hedgehogs.”
