LATCHFORD Albion's 48-6 win at Heysham Atoms was marred by a serious injury.

Hooker Jack Phillips suffered a dislocated ankle and broken fibula, and is facing a long road to recovery.

He was taken to hospital, where the ankle was put back into place successfully, but he requires an operation on his leg to insert a plate.

Heather Rushworth, sports rehabitator at Heysham Atoms and Kendal Town FC, provided Phillips with emergency medical aid on the pitch.

A Latchford Albion statement reads: "We would like to thank the Heysham Atoms physio who offered great care to Jack immediately after the injury."

An spell of four tries in the opening 20 minutes saw the visors take control of the game.

Firstly Reece Hughes crossed out wide on five minutes, with Matty Rudd adding a fine conversion.

From the next set of six, Albion doubled their lead.

Mike Walker was held up close to the line, but a quick play the ball allowed the opportunity to recycle along the line where wing Gareth Fairhurst was the grateful recipient. Rudd again converted.

Next up was second row Ben Harper, who barged his way through three would-be defenders to score out wide.

Will Bates further increased the lead when he jinked his way over from 25 yards, stepping through the home defence. Rudd added the extras.

The hosts responded with a converted try on 30 minutes but any thoughts Heysham had of getting back into the game were quickly extinguished after the break when prop forward Jack Foulkes crashed over near the posts, with Rudd converting.

Walker supported a Fairhurst break to further extend the lead.

A Rob Marsh looping pass allowed Hughes to register his second try of the game, with Rudd adding the extras.

Next Rudd turned provider when his long pass allowed Fairhurst the chance to squeeze in at the corner.

The scoring was complete on 75 minutes, when the impressive Bate took advantage of a tiring defence to race away and Rudd added the extras.

This Saturday sees Latchford return to Victoria Park when they host Blackbrook, kick-off 2pm.

The fixture is Albion’s past player day, where any ex-members of the club are invited to come and watch the current crop of talent. Food and drink will be provided.
