A FOOTBALL league in Warrington is helping men to ditch excess weight, and grow a community in the process.

'Man v Fat' is a football league in Warrington that was created in October 2020, but due to lockdowns, it has only been able to run consistently since April last year.

The league is open to players from the age of 18 upwards and has many competitors taking part who are into their 50s - players must have a BMI of 27.5 or above to join.

There are eight teams in the league, all with a full squad of 11 or more players.

The league was created to encourage weight loss and a healthy lifestyle, and overall the teams in the league this year have lost a collective 196 kilograms - which is just shy of 30 stone.

Two players in the league this year have lost more than 30 per cent of their body weight since joining Man v Fat.

Steve Percy and Matt Little have both been playing in the league since it started in 2020; Steve has lost 52 kilograms, and Matt has lost 42 kilograms.

Dan Edwards is a coach within the league: "[Steve] hypes up the boys so much and is crucial to a number of the lads in our league losing weight.

"Matt has been one of our stars who has seen so many lifestyle benefits to losing weight, most importantly being more active for his young children and making the most of them being so young!"

One of the ways that teams in the league compete with each other is by recording the weight loss of the teams - this means that any injured players can still compete, as they can still lose weight.
