AFTER months of hard study and work, outstanding college students in Widnes are celebrating their success.
Pupils on vocational courses at Riverside College and Cronton Sixth Form were celebrated at the colleges’ annual Vocational Student of the Year Awards ceremony.
In front of an audience of friends and family, students from across course areas varying from hair and beauty to performing arts, and from construction to catering and hospitality took to the stage to collect awards.
More than 30 awards were presented to students, all of which were given by special guests including chair of governors Neil McGrath, mayor Cllr Mark Dennett and mayoress Andrea Dennett.
Mary Murphy, the college’s principal, said that it was important to celebrate the achievements of the students, which were attained despite challenges presented by the pandemic.
She said: “The annual vocational awards evening is a very special date in the college calendar, and this year’s was a truly wonderful event – the first live presentation after a two year hiatus due to the pandemic.
“Our vocational students have worked incredibly hard during their time with us, and this was a fantastic opportunity to recognise their dedication.”
Three students received special recognition for winning individual awards.
Heidi Gray was named Overall Adult Student of the Year, Daniel Tildsley was presented with the Overall Vocational Student of the Year at Cronton and Mia Williams was given Overall Vocational Student of the Year at Riverside.
The evening was complemented with musical performances by two students from the Centre of Excellence for Performing Arts.
Emily McDonnell performed ‘As If We Never Said Goodbye’ from Sunset Boulevard, while Jack Wright sang ‘Empty Tables’ from Les Misérables.
