A CONCERTGOER was attacked in a serious and unprovoked assault in Widnes on Saturday night.

The 60-year-old victim, who has been described as a ‘gentle giant’ by a friend, suffered a large cut to his head as a result of the incident.

It occurred at around 10.45pm on Lower House Lane following the end of the Bryan Adams concert at the DCBL Stadium.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment and police are investigating.

His friend said: “Imagine having a really lovely night out with good friends watching the legend Bryan Adams in concert, so close to home when this happens.

“A 60-year-old man – a true gent, in fact a gentle giant – walking home in good spirits when he is the subject of an unprovoked attack and seriously assaulted.

“I am deeply saddened and sickened to hear of his injuries. He is in a world of pain and does not deserve this.

“One punch can kill. Thankfully, my good friend is still here to recount what happened to him, but there is no doubt that this brutal assault will affect him and his partner for a long time.
