A SUSPECT has been charged with offences including false imprisonment and strangulation after a domestic incident in Runcorn.

Police were called to an address on Charlton Close shortly after 1.30am on Thursday, June 16, following ‘reports of a disturbance’.

Officers attended the scene and arrested a 30-year-old man.

Kevin McHugh, of Charlton Close, has since been charged with assault, false imprisonment and two counts of intentional strangulation.

It is the first time that the latter charge has been used in Cheshire since it came into force nationally earlier this month.

The defendant was brought before Warrington Magistrates Court on Friday, June 17, and was remanded into custody ahead of a further appearance before Liverpool Crown Court next month.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Officers have charged a man with a number of offences following a domestic incident at an address in Runcorn.

“At around 1.40am on Thursday, June 16, police were called to reports of a disturbance at an address on Charlton Close.

“Officers attended the scene, and a 30-year-old man was arrested at the property.

“Kevin Craig McHugh has since been charged with assault, false imprisonment and two counts of intentional strangulation.

“McHugh, of Charlton Close in Runcorn, appeared at Warrington Magistrates Court on Friday, June 17, where he was remanded in custody.

“He is next set to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, July 15.”
