A WIDNES salon owner who has a passion for helping to provide college students with experience held a special event in the town.

In December 2021, Kathryn Carney, owner of Crème de la Crème Hair Boutique based inside Widnes Market, set her apprentices a challenge to organise and manage an event based around fashion day.

The staff were ‘pushed outside of their comfort zone’ when organising this event and Chloe Worral, who is studying a level three apprenticeship in hairdressing, took the reins.

The apprentices arranged and met with council management to find a suitable venue to hold the event and even organised a visit from mayor of Halton, Cllr Christopher Rowe.

As Kathryn has worked closely with Riverside College for seven years employing full time students and apprentices, she liaised with the staff there to help with the event.

The team found six models who they dressed and prepared for the catwalk to show off their looks and the event took place last Friday, May 13.

Kathryn said: “My staff planned and organised and pulled this off - from finding the venue, to having a stage and catwalk built by Ian Bates, to organising the models and outfits for the day.

“My apprentices absolutely did a fantastic job and not only am I very proud of their work ethic, motivation and dedication they are proud of themselves that this was a huge success.”

“I have a lot of passion to help the younger generation build themselves up to the best they can be within the industry and I love to share my experiences and knowledge with them and hope they all take something from it and take it with them to make a huge success of their life and career.

“Now my staff have had this brilliant opportunity to organise this event they are already eager to get planning for the future - so look out for Widnes fashion day 2023.
