HALTON’S coronavirus infection rate saw a considerable rise over the past week, the latest data shows.

Figures indicate that 476 new cases of the virus were detected during the week up to September 23, which is the latest period for which data is available, through lab and rapid lateral flow testing.

This demonstrates an infection rate of 366.8 new cases among every 100,000 residents in the borough, which is the 155th highest rate in the UK at present.

Comparatively, the previous seven-day period up to September 16 saw 406 infections recorded at a rate of 312.9.

Halton is among, 299 of 377 areas of the UK that have seen a rise in cases (79 per cent), while 78 have seen a fall (21 per cent).

Kettering in Northamptonshire has the highest rate in the UK (959.8), followed by Neath Port Talbot in Wales (914.2) and Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales (872.8).
