IN line with the majority of areas in England, Halton has seen its coronavirus infection rate rise this past week.

During the week up to August 8, which is the latest period for which Public Heath England data is available, 417 new Covid cases were detected in the borough through lab and rapid lateral flow testing.

This demonstrates an infection rate of 322.2 cases among every 100,000 residents, which is the 85th highest rate in England compared with all other local authority areas.

Comparatively, the previous seven-day period up to August 1 saw 358 cases recorded at a rate of 276.6.

Halton is among 225 of 315 local areas in England that have seen a week-on-week rise in rates (71 per cent), while 87 have seen a fall (28 per cent) and three are unchanged.

Lincoln continues to have the highest rate in England (592.2), followed by Hull (587.8) and Exeter (579.1).
