THE number of new coronavirus cases detected in Halton this past week has fallen by almost 20 per cent on the previous week.

According to data released by Public Health England for the week up to July 31, which is the most recent period for which figures are available, 356 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the borough through lab and rapid lateral flow testing.

This demonstrates an infection rate of 275.1 cases per every 100,000 residents, which is the 128th highest rate in England compared with all other local authority areas.

Comparatively, the previous seven-day period up to July 24 saw 442 virus cases detected at a rate of 341.6.

Halton is among 285 of 315 local areas in England that have seen a week-on-week fall in case rates (90 per cent), while 30 have seen a rise (10 per cent).

Lincoln continues to have the highest rate in England (749.3), followed by Exeter (559.3) and Hull (525.4).
