THE number of coronavirus infections detected in Halton has risen again, according to the latest data from Public Health England.

During the week up to July 17, which is the most recent period for which data is available, 578 new cases were detected in the borough through lab and rapid lateral flow testing.

This is the equivalent of 446.6 cases per every 100,000 residents, which is the 188th highest infection rate in England.

The previous seven-day period up to July 10 saw 485 new infections recorded at a rate of 374.8.

Halton is among 310 of 315 local areas in England that have seen a week-on-week rise in rates (98 per cent), while five have seen a fall (two per cent).

Redcar and Cleveland continues to have the highest rate (1,577.1), followed by Middlesbrough (1,394.5) and Stockton-on-Tees (1,198.4).
