MORE than 500 new coronavirus infections have been detected in Halton this past week, according to the latest data from Public Health England.

Figures for the week up to July 15, which is the latest available, shows 524 new cases were detected in the borough through lab and rapid lateral flow testing.

This is an infection rate of 404.9 cases per every 100,000 residents, which is the 174th highest rate in England compared with all other local authority areas.

Comparatively, the previous week up to July 8 saw 466 recorded at a rate of 360.1.

Halton is among 307 of 315 local areas in England that have seen a week-on-week rise in rates (97 per cent), while eight have seen a fall (three per cent).
