HALTON recorded more than 450 new cases of coronavirus a week before so-called ‘Freedom Day’, latest figures show.

According to Public Health England data for the seven days up to July 12, which is the most recent period available, 470 infections were detected in the borough through lab and rapid lateral flow testing.

This demonstrates an infection rate of 363.2 cases among every 100,000 residents, which is the 120th highest rate in England compared with all other local authority areas.

Comparatively, the previous week up to July 5 saw 427 cases detected at a rate of 330.

Halton was among 290 of 315 local areas in England that saw a rise in case rates (92 per cent, with 25 seeing a fall (eight per cent).

South Tyneside continues to have the highest rate in England (1,310.1), followed by Redcar and Cleveland (1,017.9) and Hartlepool (1,015.3).
