FEWER than 10 cases of coronavirus were detected in Halton over the past week, the latest figures show.

Data from Public Health England for the seven days to May 28, which is the most recent period for which data is available, shows eight new cases were recorded in the borough through lab and rapid lateral flow testing.

This is the equivalent of 6.2 cases per every 100,000 residents, which is the 279th highest infection rate in England.

The previous week up to May 21 saw 10 new cases recorded at a rate of 7.7 per every 100,000 people.

Halton was among 96 of 315 local areas in England that have seen a fall in case rates (30 per cent), while 211 saw a rise and eight are unchanged.

Blackburn with Darwen continues to have the highest rate (436.2), followed by Bolton (375.2) and Rossendale (312).
