AROUND 20 coronavirus infections are being detected among every 100,000 residents in Halton, the latest Public Health England data shows.

During the seven days up to May 10, which is the most recent period for which figures are available, 26 Covid-19 cases were identified through lab and rapid lateral flow testing in the borough.

This translates to an infection rate of 20,1 cases per every 100,000 residents, which is the 117th highest rate in England compared with all other local authority areas.

The previous week up to May 3 saw 18 new cases recorded at a rate of 13.9.

Halton was among 185 out of 315 local areas in England that have seen a rise in case rates (59 per cent), while 119 (38 per cent) have seen a fall and 11 are unchanged.

Bolton has the highest rate in England (228.5), followed by Erewash in Derbyshire (163) and Blackburn with Darwen (111.6).
