Cllr Tom Anderson has been unanimously chosen to lead the 23 Conservative councillors on Wirral Council.

Cllr Anderson, 34, represents Greasby, Franky and Irby after the Conservatives held the ward in last week’s election.

He replaces Cllr Jeff Green, who will take up the position of Deputy Mayor at the Council’s Annual meeting next week.

Cllr. Tom Anderson said: "I am humbled to have been chosen to lead Wirral's Conservative Group.

“I would like to pay tribute to my predecessors, Jeff Green and Ian Lewis, for their steadfast service to Wirral.

“Our immediate priority is to ensure Wirral has a sustainable local plan that protects green belt, with necessary developments on brownfield sites only.

“We have to support our residents, high streets and local businesses as we recover from the pandemic.

“The Government has given Wirral Council more than £200 million to support us through the COVID-19 crisis and we need to ensure that this money is spent wisely and benefits the most in need."

Wirral Council is in no overall control as no single party has gained a majority.

The current make-up of seat in Wirral Council:

  • Labour - 30
  • Conservatives - 23
  • Liberal Democrats - 6
  • Greens - 5
  • Independents - 2

Cllr Anderson added: "It’s clear from the results not one party has a mandate to govern alone.

“Negotiations with parties start this week and as of yet, it’s unclear who will lead the Council.

“The Conservatives will work constructively to ensure that the best outcomes for our residents."
