WINCHESTER is the last council in the country to finish its local election declarations.

Just two of the seats from the 4,809 in England being contested are still to be declared.

These are from the St Michael ward on Winchester City Council, where nine candidates are standing.

The Liberal Democrats won six of the 15 being contested on Thursday, meaning they retain control of the council, with the Conservatives picking up the other seven to be declared.

Counting was due to begin on Friday, but was delayed by a fire alarm, so it was Saturday before it started.

Just before midnight it was announced there will be a recount of St Michaels ward today (Monday May 10).

It is unclear what time that will be, as counting will also take place on Monday for the Wiltshire police and crime commissioner election.

That is one of 15 PCC elections taking place on Monday, the final ones to be declared from the 337 contests that took place in England, Scotland and Wales on Thursday, apart from the last Winchester ward.
