WOMEN will form the majority of Labour’s new candidates for this year’s Halton Council elections, with a retired cancer researcher, community campaigner and health visitor among the contenders hoping to win seats in Widnes.
The town has long been a stronghold for the party but this year’s local elections have shaken things up, with newly-redrawn boundaries meaning every ward in the town will be up for grabs.
One candidate hoping to win in Birchfield is Angela Ball. Before retirement she worked in clinical research for nearly 20 years, including 12 years supporting cancer research at The Christie hospital where she was associate director of research.
Laura Bevan is one of two new candidates in the newly-formed Bankfield Ward. She is active in a number of local community groups and helped organise the local More in Common events in Widnes. She also organises fundraisers and litter picks.
Louise Goodall, also running in Bankfield, is a qualified nurse who retrained as a health visitor. She now works with vulnerable adults and children with acquired brain injuries. During the pandemic she has also worked in the track and trace system and volunteered in vaccine trials.
Andrea Wall is running the party’s campaign this year. She has been a councillor in the Kingsway ward since 2014 and is now standing in the new Highfield ward.
She said, “I am sad that the Government’s Boundary Commission decided to break up Kingsway Ward, but I am determined to work just as hard for Highfield Ward if I am elected.
“My decision was based on wanting to stay representing the area that Widnes Golf Club is situated in following my long running community driven campaign to stop it getting built on.
“I believe I am the first woman to run the majority of the Labour campaign in the local elections and I am proud of that, in particular mentoring some of our new women candidates.”
The local elections take place on May 6.
