FEWER than 80 cases of coronavirus were recorded in Halton over the past week, the latest Public Health England figures show.

In the seven days up to March 25, which is the most recent period for which data is available, 79 Covid-19 infections were identified through testing.

This is an infection rate of 61.0 per 100,000 residents, which is the 91st highest in England compared with all other local authority areas.

During the previous week up to March 18, 78 new cases were recorded at a rate of 60.3.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government's testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days, March 26-29, has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 135 (43 per cent) have seen a rise in case rates, while 172 (55 per cent) have seen a fall and eight are unchanged.

Corby in Northamptonshire continues to have the highest rate in England (235.4) followed by Rotherham (169.2) and Barnsley (157.2).
