THE number of new coronavirus cases recorded in Halton in the space of a week has fallen again.

In the seven days up to February 15, which is the most recent period for which Public Health England data is available, a total of 219 new cases were identified in the borough.

This is an infection rate of 169.2 new Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people – the 74th highest in England compared with all other local authority areas.

During the previous week up to February 8, 343 new cases were recorded in Halton at a rate of 265.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government's testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days, February 16-19, has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 14 (4 per cent) have seen a rise in case rates, while 299 (95 per cent) have seen a fall and two are unchanged.

Corby in Northamptonshire has the highest rate in England (325.4), followed by Middlesbrough (295.8) and Ashfield in Nottinghamshire (286.9).
