FIREFIGHTERS rescued an elderly resident of a flat following a blaze in Newton last night, Saturday.

Crews arrived just before 7pm to find a ground floor flat in sheltered accommodation in Sturgess Street on fire with one person unaccounted for.

Four firefighters entered the property wearing breathing apparatus to rescue the occupant who then needed to receive oxygen from North West Ambulance Service.

Three fire engines were then used to extinguished the flames with hose reel jets.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters rescued one occupant quickly and immediately requested the urgent attendance of North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).

"Fire crews administered oxygen to the casualty who was conscious and breathing. NWAS colleagues arrived quickly and began to treat the casualty.

"The fire was extinguished by 7.13pm and firefighters, still wearing breathing apparatus, began to ventilate the property, a further two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were committed to the flat immediately above to assess for any fire damage or spread.

"The casualty was taken to hospital for further checks as a precaution."

An investigation is under way but the fire is not considered to be suspicious.
