HALTON’S coronavirus infection rate is one of the highest in England, the latest Public Health England data shows.

The borough has the seventh highest rate of new Covid-19 cases compared with all other local authority areas in the country.

In the seven days up to January 9, a total of 1,569 new cases were recorded in Halton compared with 1,132 during the previous week up to January 2.

As such, the borough’s infection rate is now 1212.4 cases per 100,000 people.

Halton also saw the fourth biggest week-on-week rise in its case rate, with it having been calculated as 874.7 per 100,000 people in the previous week up to January 2.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government's testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days, January 10-13, has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.
