SUPPORTERS of Warrington and Halton Hospital Trust’s Moobs and Boobs campaign are being encouraged to be bizarre with their fundraising ideas.

The campaign has been launched by Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals Charity to raise money for all things breast cancer care for both women and men.

Breast cancer is often thought of as something that only affects women, but it is also a condition that can develop among men.

The campaign got off to a fantastic start with two friends – Mairi McLaren and Meg Horrocks – raising an impressive £1,425 by undertaking a number of sponsored challenges.

This included Sober October, which the 25-year-olds said was particularly difficult, winter canoeing in a giant bra, a 15-mile fancy dress hike and dyeing their hair pink.

Runcorn and Widnes World:

The donation is the first towards a £10,000 target which will culminate in Moobs and Boobs supporters climbing Mount Snowdon through the night in June 2021.

The Moobs and Boobs Group was started by Mairi’s mum Pat, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in August.

Pat is on the chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy journey now, but she says that she remembers well receiving her sickening diagnosis in the breast screening unit.

“The unit at Warrington Hospital offers amazing diagnostics and kind, compassionate care, but it could do so much more with those above and beyond things that the NHS doesn’t fund,” she said.

That is why WHH Charity is seeking donation to fund initiatives such as post-op bras, so that ladies can have their prosthesis properly fitted during their first appointment, whether they can afford a mastectomy bra or not.

Another is allowing men to have their own waiting space to collect their results, rather than having to sit in a female dominated environment.

Helen Higginson, head of fundraising at WHH Charity, said: “Everyone is welcome to join the Moobs and Boobs group.

“We are encouraging supporters to be as whacky or make it as challenging as they wish, so long as they commit to fundraising, as we have got a lot of above and beyond love to create.”
