A sports club on the edge of Widnes has unveiled plans to build a new gym and physiotherapy room.

Parklands Sports Club has applied for permission to extend its clubhouse onto land currently occupied by several containers in order to improve facilities for its 1,000 members.

According to the club’s planning application, the proposal would see the “unsightly” containers removed and replaced with a single-storey extension containing a gym, two treatment rooms and a rehabilitation room.

The club’s planning statement said: “The rationale for the proposal is to facilitate training and fitness all year round, and to promote active, healthy lifestyles for all ages. The provision of indoor training facilities is for use in conjunction with outdoor sports activities.”

The club currently provides facilities for two adult football squads, ten junior football teams and an under-14s rugby team.

The club added that the proposal “represents an opportunity to enhance the existing facilities at Parklands Sports Club with an attractive and modest extension to the existing building”.

Although Parklands is on the edge of Widnes, it is covered by Knowsley Council which aims to make a decision on the club’s application by December 15.

The clubs application adds that Knowsley’s own pitch strategy “requires the council to support and to provide opportunity for investment where it will deliver improvements to sports pitches and associated facilities to enhance their quality and value”.
