A DEDICATED team and a determined set of managers has kept this Dalton pub going through a difficult 2020.

Emma Bell of The Brown Cow, Dalton, runs the business with her husband Paul, his son Charlie, and their General Manager Matthew Woodall.

The Westmorland Gazette:

Despite having no access to Government support during the lockdown, themselves and the staff are striving to keep the pub open.

The pub, located in Goose Green, is excited for the future and aims to carry on serving the public at the best of its ability.

The difficulties have been numerous, but the team remain strong and have added new services to their establishment.

The Westmorland Gazette:

The Brown Cow has praised its supporters for helping it through the ‘difficult times’ caused by Covid 19. Their support and the staff’s ability to work under pressure has been instrumental in the survival of the business.

Emma said: “We carried on with our delivery service which really helped us get through this. It really helped to keep everyone in work in the long run.

“My father in law has run the pub since 1994. My husband operates it with his son today. It’s a family ran business.”

While the pub was unable to get any assistance from the Government support schemes during the pandemic, the staff have been able to push through.

The Westmorland Gazette:

Emma said: “Covid has been really hard. The Brown Cow didn’t get any help from Government grants, which is why we started the takeaway.

“We got the furlough for the staff but no support for the pub itself because we didn’t qualify.

“The grading was based on the turnover we produced which was judged on if you could access any money, and we were over that, so we got nothing.

“We are keeping the takeaway service going because its proving really popular.

“It was really because of that on the third of July we were able to bring some staff back and give them some hours. They had been out of work for so long so its good to get them back in.

“We have 17 staff members at the moment. Everyone is pulling together as a team.

The Westmorland Gazette:

“We are making a lot of use of our outdoor areas.

“With the restrictions being how they are, and people can only mix in their own house holds we try to keep them as comfortable as possible as winter approaches.

“We have outdoor heating in our beer garden.

“We are trying to spread the word about that at the moment.

“There will be some changes to our menu. There will be smaller portions and cheaper prices for people.

“We are doing all table service for everything, and also providing take away drinks in two-pint cartoons for the public.

“They are becoming really popular.

The Westmorland Gazette:

“We also own the Red Lion on Dalton, Market Street which we are really proud of.

“It’s a drinking pub but you can order takeaways from the Brown Cow to eat up there.

“That’s all table service as well and customers are waited on.”
