BUSINESSES in Ulverston were treated to a visit from the town mayor and the High Sheriff of Cumbria recently.

Cllr Sharon Webster, Ulverston mayor, and High Sheriff Julie Barton visited different establishments around the town to offer their thanks for what they have done to help the community during the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

Many traders and businesses in the area were active on the Ulverston Self Isolation Group Facebook page making sure no vulnerable people went without help.

Julie Barton, High Sheriff of Cumbria, said: "I have been contacted by quite a few mayors across the county and asked to visit which I love to do as you always learn something new when you get there.

"It is great to come out to visit all the areas and shine a bright light on what is going on in these communities."

They first went to Booths in Ulverston, where they spoke to trading manager Jonathan Metcalfe and Zoe Clegg, process manager.

Mr Metcalfe said: "It is nice to be recognised really.

"We have kept all our procedures in place since the start, monitoring the number to keep people safe, keeping things sanitised, and we have had really positive feedback on that."

Following this they went on to Shed 1 Distillery, then Ford Park's Base by Elite Dining. From there they visited a plethora of businesses in the town centre, including: Lake District Lobster and Seafood, Brocklebank's, the market hall, Gillam's, and Irving's Butchers to name a few.

Shed 1 Distillery played a key role during the lockdown crisis, providing 5,500 bottles of hand sanitizer for local businesses and care providers, using their alcohol stock to do so.

Mayor Sharon Webster said: "It was a great day as I really enjoy meeting people.

"Everyone has really pulled together well this year.

"I enjoy being mayor of Ulverston. It is a really special town."
