THE WITTON COLUMN - By Paul Harper

IT’S been another busy week at Witton Albion and, from a footballing point of view, a successful one, as Albion have enjoyed a purple patch in the last few days.

Carl Macauley’s team sit in second position (at time of writing), just behind Warrington Town who are the current league leaders, after an impressive 3-1 win on the road at Gainsborough Trinity.

Gainsborough is always a difficult place to go, they have a good support over there and Curtis Woodhouse has put together a good side who should be competing at the upper end of the Pitching In Northern Premier League this season.

It could easily have been a different story. Conceding a goal so early on, as we did in just the third minute of the game, could have seen heads drop and the game slip away before it had really begun, but the lads showed fantastic spirit and importantly got back on level terms soon after through an Isaac Baldwin long range special.

Tom Owens and James Hooper then netted in the second half to seal an important three points, and keep the early pressure on Paul Carden’s Warrington who have also enjoyed a strong start to the campaign and look to be the team to catch.

Also at the weekend, there was a big win for our Under-21 side who beat Winstanley Warriors 4-1. I’ve spoken about them a bit in these recent columns, but there’s some good talent in the squad and they are looking good so far this term. Well done lads and keep up the good work.

Off the pitch, things continue to be as busy as ever. We are on a recruitment push with positions available in the Social Club to help out with table service and behind the bar, while I am looking for some assistance to maintain, expand and further improve our media and social media offering.

If you feel you have the necessary skills, drive and dedication to want to help the club, please check out the club website for details and get in touch.

On Monday, the draw for the Buildbase FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round took place, the round in which Witton enter proceedings. It has paired us with a trip to Scarborough, which is one of the toughest draws we could have got.

Nevertheless, we defeated the Seadogs a couple of weeks ago, so we’ll have to do that again to progress further in this great non-league cup competition. Can we repeat what we did in 1992 and reach the final? You never know!

Finally, we have a big game coming up at Wincham Park this Saturday afternoon. Atherton Collieries are the visitors and it would be great to see a healthy attendance to come and support the lads. Hopefully, we can continue our good run of form and continue to battle at the top end of the table.

Stay safe and see you all soon.
