TEN years after Challenge Cup selection heartbreak with Warrington Wolves Richie Myler was back at Wembley today helping Leeds Rhinos to glory with a man-of-the-match display.

The Widnesian, omitted from The Wire side that defeated Leeds in the 2010 showpiece showdown, won the Lance Todd Trophy from the full-back position he has settled into nicely under former Wire assistant coach Richard Agar.

The part he played in setting up two tries for winger Ash Handley were a major factor for Leeds, who needed a drop goal from England scrum-half Luke Gale to seal the success 17-16 five minutes from time.

“It was close, I’m overwhelmed,” said Myler, 30, who started his career with Widnes and Salford, spent 2010 to 2015 with Warrington and then had two years at Catalans Dragons before the move to Leeds.

“Where we came from as a group, when we lost to Bradford 12 months ago (in the cup), we have a special group who work hard for each other.

“I’m a bit emotional but that group of boys deserve everything.”

When Leeds made it clear Gale and Robert Lui would be first-choice half-backs this year, Myler, who went on to win the cup with Wolves against Leeds in 2012, looked to be on the outer at Headingley.

But when young Jack Walker picked up an injury Myler stepped into the full-back role and grown with it as the season has progressed.

“It’s one of those, when adversity comes you either stick in or go, and I like to think 12 months of hard work has got me here," said Myler.

"I’m in a special team and the way the halves control the game helps me and my game.”
