BONFIRE Night will be unusually quiet in Halton this year, as the borough's firework display is cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Halton Borough Council expressed its disappointment at not to being able to stage the popular family event on November 5, but says it is not possible to hold such an event in the current situation.

It is hoped that the display will be back with a bang next year when a special event is proposed as part of Halton's Borough of Culture celebrations.

Cllr Eddie Jones, the council’s portfolio holder for visitor economy and events, says: "We have delayed this decision as long as possible, however we have now, regrettably, had to make the difficult decision to cancel the event, which is enjoyed by many thousands of our residents every year.

"But we have no choice, and I am sure people will understand that, and will not be surprised by the decision.

"The health and safety of residents and staff is paramount.

"However, we are being positive and looking ahead to next year when Halton becomes the Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture, and a very special celebratory fireworks display is planned as part of a very exciting programme."
