A Wirral-born writer and musician has announced that her latest play is coming to the Liverpool Irish Festival next month.

Helen Tierney is thrilled to bring Mrs Shaw Herself to Merseyside, following many performances in London and the South-east as well as at the Bury, Watford, Bloomsbury and Edinburgh Fringe festivals.

This Shaw Society-acclaimed production is the first time the life and thoughts of Charlotte Payne-Townshend (aka Mrs George Bernard Shaw) have been presented on stage in her own words.

Charlotte Payne-Townshend was married to one of the most famous men in the world in what was commonly assumed to be a sexless union, yet there is so much more to her story.

Wirral Globe:

Irish heiress, Fabian, suffrage supporter, LSE benefactor and champion of women’s rights, her legacy until now has been largely neglected.

This hour-long show brings her life and achievements into the spotlight and explores this very unconventional Irish love-story with live accompaniment on Celtic harp.

Helen Tierney from Bebington, who attended Wirral Grammar School for Girls, co-devised the show with actress Alexis Leighton and is very excited to be a part of the Festival.

She said “It is an important year for George Bernard Shaw- the seventieth anniversary of his death and the year he comes out of copyright, but Charlotte’s story is really worth celebrating too so it is a great time to bring him out of her shadow.”

The show is scheduled for October 21 at 7:30pm and is an online event.
