A MAN has admitted attacking his victim with a meat cleaver during a ‘horrific assault’.
David Laponder admitted wounding with intent at Liverpool Crown Court this morning, Monday, in connection with the incident in March.
Daniel Gibbons, from Widnes, was repeatedly struck in the head with the weapon on the morning of Saturday, March 21, on Old Liverpool Road in Warrington and suffered serious injuries.
Laponder, from Stockport, was arrested four days later.
He had previously been charged with attempted murder, but his not guilty plea to the count has now been accepted by the prosecution.
Appearing via video link to HMP Altcourse before judge Anil Murray, the 35-year-old also pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and assaulting an emergency services worker following his detention.
Laponder will now be sentenced back at the same court next month.
The road was closed for several hours in the aftermath of the attack.
